Ava M. Plakins is Of Counsel in Bonner Kiernan's Philadelphia office. Ava's practice focuses on the defense of medical-malpractice matters at both the trial and appellate levels. Ava has appeared before the Superior and Commonwealth Courts of Pennsylvania, and has briefed numerous other appeals to these courts as well as to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.  

Before joining Bonner Kiernan, Ava practiced for 11 years with a specialized insurance-defense firm in suburban Philadelphia, where she represented physicians, nurses, nurse anesthetists, hospitals, nursing homes, and other health-care providers. She also previously practiced law in New York and Connecticut. 

Before practicing law, Ava was a journalist, working for and/or publishing in Esquire, New York, Rolling Stone, Connoisseur, Money, and other magazines. She was also editor and publisher of the Connecticut Law Tribune, a weekly newspaper serving Connecticut’s law community, for many years. 

Ava received her B.A. cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976, her M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1979, and her J.D. from Fordham University in 1988.  She is admitted in the state and various federal courts of Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
