Carolyn Israel Stein is a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. After 20 years of experience litigating civil cases throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia, she holds the highest peer review rating issued by Martindale Hubbell - AV ("Very High to Preeminent" Legal Ability, "Very High" Ethical Standards).  Ms. Stein has been recognized as a Top Rated Lawyer in Washington, D.C. by Lexis Nexis Martindale-Hubbell.

Carrie’s practice is focused on the defense of professional liability cases, product liability cases, construction disputes, premises liability cases, and other cases of personal injury. She has defended hospitals, physicians, physicians’ assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other medical specialists in a large variety of claims of medical negligence, including claims of failure to diagnose; failure to communicate; misinterpretation of studies; retained foreign bodies; administration of improper medication; administration of excessive medications; birth injuries (cerebral palsy, persistent pulmonary hypertension, other brain injuries, shoulder dystocia, fetal laceration, and fetal demise); psychological malpractice; vaccine-related injuries; improper neonatal care; inappropriate use of anesthesia; improper monitoring; hospital falls; improperly performed surgeries; and other injury and wrongful death actions.

Carrie has served as an invited speaker for the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM), District of Columbia Voluntary Bar Association, and various hospitals and insurers. Carrie received her Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, from Syracuse University in 1987, and her Juris Doctor degree, with honors, from The National Law Center at George Washington University, in 1991. Before entering private practice, Carrie served as law clerk to the Honorable James P. Salmon, Judge of the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Carrie is a member of the Bars of the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland. She is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the District of Columbia and Maryland. She has been admitted Pro Hac Vice in federal court in Pennsylvania and state court in Virginia. She is a member of the D.C. Defense Lawyers’ Association (DCDL), Maryland Defense Counsel (MDC), the MD-DC Society for Healthcare Risk Management, the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM), and the Voluntary Bar Association of the District of Columbia.
