Michael Nussbaum is Special Counsel in the Firm's Washington, D.C. office and has practiced in Washington D.C for more than 35 years, most recently as Partner in the Washington, D.C office of Ropes & Gray. He specializes in general civil litigation, arbitration, and Alternative Dispute Resolution, including complex commercial cases, multinational disputes, transnational insolvencies, legal and accounting professional liability, insurance coverage, and media and First Amendment issues.
Mr. Nussbaum has tried cases and argued appeals in federal and state courts throughout the country, and has also tried commercial arbitrations in the United States, Europe and South America. He has broad experience as an Arbitrator and as counsel in American Arbitration Association, International Chamber of Commerce, and ad hoc arbitrations. He has also served as a Special Master and Early Neutral Evaluator for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
Mr. Nussbaum often lectures to various groups regarding trial practice and Alternative Dispute Resolution, and has served as lecturer/member of the adjunct faculty of several institutions, including Harvard Law School, Georgetown Law School, Antioch Law School, Howard University, and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (local and national faculty). Mr. Nussbaum is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (D.C. State Committee, 1996-2002) and a former member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Chicago Law School.
After attending Dartmouth College and Hofstra University, Mr. Nussbaum earned J.D and Master of Comparative law degrees (French law) from the University of Chicago Law School. He served an internship in the Legal Department of the European Economic Community (now the European Union) in Brussels, Belgium before entering private practice.
